A customer sends us a photograph of a toy that looks like it was made from two slightly different fabrics. It almost never was.
What nap is
Plush is a pile fabric, like velvet or corduroy. The fibres stand up and lie over in a direction, and that direction changes how light bounces off the surface.
Stroke a plush toy one way and it looks darker; the other way, lighter. That is nap, and it is a property of every pile fabric ever woven.
Why it makes panels mismatch
A pattern is laid out on a roll of fabric and the panels are cut from it. If the layout rotates some panels to fit more of them onto the roll, those panels have their nap running a different way from their neighbours.
Sewn together, they reflect light differently and read as two shades. The dye lot is identical; the fabric is identical; the toy still looks patchy.
Why cheap plush ignores it
Laying every panel in the same nap direction uses noticeably more fabric, because you can no longer rotate pieces to nest them tightly.
That extra fabric is a real cost, and it is invisible in a quote. It is one of the quietest ways to make a plush cheaper and one of the most visible in the finished toy.
How to check before you commit
Ask the supplier directly whether the pattern is laid out with consistent nap direction. It is a yes or no question and the answer is informative either way.
Then, on the sewn sample, stroke the fur across every seam. If the shade steps at a join, the layout rotated a panel.
